What is Sciatica?
Sciatica is a condition characterized by pain radiating along the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back through the hips, buttocks, and down each leg.
This pain can range from mild discomfort to severe, debilitating agony. While sciatica is commonly associated with lower back pain, its hallmark symptom is nerve pain that follows the sciatic nerve’s pathway.
Causes of Sciatica
Sciatica is typically caused by compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve. Some of the most common causes include:
- Herniated or Bulging Discs – When the soft inner material of a spinal disc protrudes, it can press against the sciatic nerve, causing inflammation and pain.
- Spinal Stenosis – Narrowing of the spinal canal can put pressure on the nerve, leading to sciatic pain.
- Piriformis Syndrome – The piriformis muscle, located in the buttock region, can spasm and compress the sciatic nerve.
- Spondylolisthesis – A condition where one vertebra slips over another, pinching the sciatic nerve.
- Trauma or Injury – A direct injury to the lower back or pelvis can trigger sciatic pain.
Symptoms of Sciatica
- Radiating pain from the lower back down to the legs
- Tingling or numbness in the leg or foot
- Weakness in the affected leg
- Worsened pain with prolonged sitting or standing
How RPM Physical Therapy Can Help
At RPM Physical Therapy, we take a hands-on, holistic approach to treating sciatica, ensuring not only pain relief but also long-term recovery.
1. Manual Therapy and Soft Tissue Work
Our targeted techniques, including myofascial release, deep tissue mobilization, and trigger point therapy, help relieve nerve compression and reduce inflammation.
2. Dry Needling for Nerve Pain Relief
Dry needling releases tight muscles and trigger points, allowing for better circulation and reduced nerve irritation.
3. Customized Exercise Programs
We focus on strengthening core and lower body muscles to provide better spinal support and reduce nerve compression.
4. Posture and Movement Analysis
Improving posture and correcting faulty movement patterns can alleviate sciatic nerve stress and prevent future flare-ups.
Long-Term Sciatica Prevention
- Maintain strong core muscles to support spinal alignment
- Use proper body mechanics when lifting or bending
- Stay active with low-impact exercises such as swimming and walking
- Incorporate stretching to maintain flexibility and nerve mobility
